I Love to Learn New Things...

"Every man has a right to a Saturday night bath." ~ Lyndon B. Johnson

"And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything." ~ William Shakespeare

"You can never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.
~ Scott Adams

Earlier this week I had a new visitor to my Blog.. He left me a comment that said I had engaged him.. I was of course thrilled with that.. I was thinking that was a good thing?.. then he invited me to his blog and I do love going on blog visits so I hurried right on over to check him out... It was there that I learned a new thing.. a new to me thing at least.. he had American Sentence poems on his blog.. I had never.. ever seen one that I remember.. never heard of them.. never wrote one myself.. that was not going to do... I liked them.. I wanted to write one.. I wanted to know more about them.. I googled and read and googled some more.. I thought many of the ones I found to be very profound and meaningful.. Most people compare them to a haiku though I think they would be more like senryu.. because of their often satirical nature.. Finally I felt that I had googled enough.. I tried to write a few of my own.. I might not be good at it yet.. these may be terrible when judged by some that were found when I googled them.. But these are mine.. and my first ones at that.. I even looked and looked for something to illustrate them with.. I hope you enjoy my first try at something new.. Mine are not as grand as his.. so I do hope you will visit his blog.. Thanks for a bump in a new direction Sepiru Chris...

~ "Direction" ~ Life spins me in so many directions.. I need a compass to find myself! 7/31/2010

.. ( and yes smarty pants..you know who you are... I do know the difference in a compass and a GPS device.. but mine has a compass in it..!)

~ "Lunch" ~ My stomach in fowl condition.. I could only eat soup and quackers.. 7/30/2010

~ "at 4 am" ~ The roosters are crowing in chorus... spurring the morning sun to rise... 7/31/2010

~ " High and Dry at the Courthouse ".. ~ Judged to be no longer useful~ a fountain thirsts in the courtyard... 7/31/2010

I hope you have enjoyed my American sentence poems.. or maybe I should only claim a try at them.. I know they aren't the best but they are what my Daddy would call "quick work".. something new.. a honest try.. They are fun.. You might enjoy writing one of them yourself.. I love learning new things.. and though these may not be perfect.. I think they see me off to a good start.. Do you know of a poetry form that I haven't tried yet.. send it along in a comment and I will surely give it a shot.. Thanks for stopping by my blog! Have a wonderful day!

I Hoped for Rain...

"And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow." ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton

"A rose must remain with the sun and the rain or its lovely promise won't come true."
~ Ray Evans

"Don't threaten me with love, baby. Let's just go walking in the rain."
~ Billie Holiday

I hoped for rain today.. the sky darkened and threatened me with a storm.. the frogs bellowed from inside the wind chime pipes.. calling desperately for rain...

~ Dave and I welcomed a few cooling drops as we scattered feed for the chickens.. raining with the sun out.. supposedly a promise of a shower tomorrow too.. the few drops rejuvenating to us even as Buzz ran for cover inside his dog house...I even set out some buckets to catch the rain water.. Thunder rolled across the sky and the wind blew.. carrying the needed rain somewhere else... I love the soothing sound of rain.. I love to walk in it's refreshing patter.. It is desperately hot and dry here.. I will have to look for Cooper's prized rain stick and give it a gentle shake.. Maybe with its help I can charm a storm to stop here for a little while.. Have a great night!

How Long Before I am Obsolete?

"New technology is useful, but it's inefficient and ugly; it knows it'll be obsolete by lunchtime tomorrow, so it has no incentive to be anything else."
~ Tom Holt

"The sage belongs to the same obsolete repertory as the virtuous maiden and the enlightened monarch." ~ Mason Cooley

"We will all, someday, experience death, and become obsolete as a dead leaf falling from a tree, crushed by passersby to ashes underlying the earth." ~ Kim Elizabeth

****************************

Sunday Seven – Episode 247

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:

Name seven items you own that many might consider obsolete these days.

This question is not hard for people my age to answer.. we have seen many things become obsolete in our lifetime.. from private telephone lines to Segway Scooters we have also seen many new and delightful inventions in our lifetime...

1~Cd's.. With new technology Cd's will soon follow the path of so many other music delivery programs ... with the ability to download any song instantly and with the new fangled devices that hold millions of songs.. why would we want to carry around a case full of silly disk?.. I remember listening to records.. I still have a few of them.. then 8 tracks.. I remember the first one I bought for myself.. it was Pink Floyd~ the wall.. then were cassettes.. and next were the Cd's.. I have a large collection of Cd's but honestly I find it easier to just download what I want to hear and play it from my desktop computer.. I haven't learned to use the newest ipod devices yet but I'm sure I will eventually catch up with the times.. I have been told that old Cd's make colorful mobiles or wind chimes if you add some bells.. Maybe I'll give that a try...

2~ VHS Movies~ These may already be obsolete.. I have a gazillion of them.. all of the Disney ones and many many of the ninja fighting/ martial arts... My children all had their own VCR.. each had their own movies.. We even own a VHS movie camera and Dave loved filming the children and any family event.. I'm pretty sure I can't make any thing with all these tapes.. I hate to throw them away bit last time I checked locally we couldn't even find a VCR to buy...

3~ Checks~ I rarely write checks.. I do have a checking account but only to pay the one or two bills that I have to mail in.. I went shopping a few weeks ago and was surprised when the lady slid my check through a new machine and then handed it right back to me along with a slip of paper to sign.. I first thought it had been denied and I knew how much money I had in the bank.. no way I would write a check that wouldn't be covered anyway... The cashier and the other patrons in line laughed at me.. the young man with his cheeks pierced that was right behind me made this suggestion.. " Granny catch up wid it.. git yoseff a card.. them paper checks is slow.."
I was almost ashamed to be so old and slow.. not to mention ignorant...

4~ Books~ I LOVE to read.. I always have a book laying somewhere close.. one in the bathroom.. a few near the bed.. reading relaxes me and helps me to go to sleep at night.. I have just learned of a new technology that allows you to carry around a device and download anything at all that you want to read.. no trips to the library or bookstore.. just plug in to the world wide web and choose a new book.. This new reading device is called a kindel and my oldest son says they are great! Somehow I wonder what will I do with the piles and piles of books that I already own..

5~ Blind Dates or dates at all for that matter ~ when I was a teen.. Jimmy, Reuben and I hid under the porch and waited to see what the boy coming to pick Trudy up would look like.. She had a blind Date.. I had asked how he would be able to drive and why would a blind man go to the movies but Jimmy had explained everything to us younger ones.. he said that the boy had a friend that had a date with Trudy's friend.. or in this case our cousin.. and that they had all decided that Trudy would date this "jar head" since neither of them had a date that night.. these days you don't have to bother with anyone setting you up for a date.. there are web sights where you can browse and shop for a significant other till you find exactly what you think you want.. you can dress up and have your photo made to entice the best man or woman out there.. you can even tell little white lies about yourself.. you can talk in instant message and decide rather the person is right for you or not.. I figure if you "date" someone every single night on-line you will be way to busy to bother with meeting anyone new.. I'm pretty sure it would take a lifetime to browse all of the social networks.. you can know them intimately before you ever set eyes on them in the real world.. maybe you will decide to forgo meeting them altogether..

6~ cameras that use film ~ from the time Grandma Morris gave me her old Brownie Hawk Eye I was in love with photo's.. I have had almost all of the latest camera's through the years.. I still have many of them on a shelf in our bedroom.. Dave and I search yard sales and antique stores for old cameras.. lately though I mostly use a digital camera and come home and plug it in to my computer and load the photo's straight into folders for use on the web.. after all you have to have decent photos for Facebook.. Myspace and all the other social networks that you might visit... Not to mention illustrations for my blog.. I can make a picture and in just a few minutes share the moment with all of my family and friends anywhere in the world.. No need for sending film away to the Jack Rabbit developers that Daddy used when we were children.. I remember the old black and whites prints coming in the mail and we would gather to pass them around... laughing and joking about the images we had waited two weeks to see...

7~undivided attention ~ I love to talk.. but when I speak I want to be listened to and looked at.. I have been more than a little upset by the technology that allows people to half listen to me while they text.. tweet or twitter someone else.. It is as if what I have to say is only half important or maybe less than that.. I have seen Cooper get so many messages at once that I would be hopelessly lost.. I don't text very well.. and I don't bother with the tweet and twittering.. . I won't text or talk while I drive and hate for anyone else to.. I want to be heard and seen.. all by myself.. not as part of a circle of friends all at once.. Maybe I am selfish.. I guess there will be a social network soon that will allow me to think I am getting undivided attention.. I guess I'll have to wait for that... Maybe then I will feel a tiny bit important and not quiet so obsolete....

Thanks for stopping by my blog.. Have a wonderful night!

#3 ~ Thursday Thunks..

Welcome to the July 22nd edition of Thursday Thunks!

They pick a subject, and your job is to interpret it anyway you want.
Write about it on your blog... simple as that.
Maybe you can interpret it as a picture - they don't care!
Please only leave a link if you have written a Thursday Thunks post.
Don't forget to go visit the other participants' blogs.
Read and comment about all their Thursday Thunks responses!
That's what all this is about after all, isn't it?
We'll have so much fun and become lifelong friends....

Thursday Thunks: None of Your Business

The TT questions are brought to you by Bud, the color of Jill Hennessy's marriage certificate and the number 33,333,333.

1. What is the most common question that you are asked (in life) that is none of the questioner's business? ~ what is the household income.. I think if Ours were higher we might not mind as much.. and honestly that question is on everything you have to fill out and unless It is important .. like maybe if we were seeking a loan.. I choose "rather not say!"

2. Who makes you happiest right now?~ I am basically a happy person.. but I love my dear

Husband Dave.. ~ I am pretty happy with my kids and grand-kids too.. and my siblings and my Mom and friends.. and readers.. need I go on?

3. Would you consider yourself to be spoiled? ~ I am a spoiler.. and maybe I am a tiny bit spoiled by Dave...

4. Do you want to be famous one day? ~ I am famous now.. everybody around here knows me.. some folks who I would rather not know me.. but truly famous.. can I get the money without the fame??

5. Could you handle being in the military?~ No I would die on the first road march.. I can make up fine cadences though.. reckon they need a writer?

6. Do you believe in Karma? ~ Of course I believe in Karma..

7. What’s the stupidest thing you ever did with your cell phone? ~ I don't "DO" anything with my cell phone except answer when it rings.. sometimes I don't even do that.. I hate cell phones..

8. Who knows a secret or two about you?~ I don't have any secrets... at least not any that anyone else knows..

9. Who is the most experimental person you know?~ does that mean they experiment with stuff? what stuff... I am going to say my oldest son.. only because he is scientific..

10. Last thing you did that ticked off your S/O (or if not in a relationship) most recent S/O?~ I most likely said something that he didn't agree with or he said something I didn't like and I was an ass..

11. Have you ever purposely been irritating to someone? If yes, explain. ~ I have never purposely been irritating to anyone.. and if I have been I wouldn't tell it on my blog for the whole world to see.. I used to follow a certain person around town giving her the nasty eye.. but I wasn't hoping to irritate her.. I was hoping she would stop.. I had and still have something I want to give her....

12. What's crazy to you? ~ I have been told I am crazy myself so I don't think there is much that really seems crazy to me...

13. Who (other than the three of us TT writers) writes the most interesting blog? ~ I visit a huge number of blogs each and every day.. I like way to many of them to list them all.. I do like my own though I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be my answer.. ThomG from Three word Wednesday has interesting blogs.. I love his writing style..

~ and those are my thoughts for Thursday's Thunks!!

Sepia Scenes...

~ This old Photo.. that I "borrowed" from a bunch of old 8mm slides.. almost appears to be a bridge to NOWHERE.. If I had to make a guess I'd say it is the Golden Gate.. But it is not labeled.. and I have never seen the real thing... Dave's Dad.. the late Mr. George.. made a gazillion and one photo's from as far away as Alaska and sent home to his wife and children.. I guess it was his way of letting them be a part of his work travels... This one started out as a blurry black and white but I like it better in Sepia.. I honestly wouldn't want to drive across a bridge that was shrouded in Mist like this one is.. Spooky!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

~ What is it about water that makes us cast away inhibitions and in many cases.. jump right in? Even the stodgiest old fogies will walk along the edge of the

water and get their toes wet in the ocean.. ~ from the great depths of the ocean to a narrow strip of plastic hooked to a water hose.. Water will always attract

those of us who love it..

~ What fun Cooper had daring the rest of us to join him in his slip.. sliding glee at Kirstin's Birthday Party.. It was plain that many of us adults really did want to run and slip and slide.. I have it on good authority that after the oldest of us left the young adults had a blast sliding across the plastic and right out onto the wet grass....

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

.. Welcome to the Wednesday Wordless edition..

Thanks for stopping by my busy world today.. I rushed around trying to get things done before the rain.. Then I counted all eleven drops as they fell onto the patio.. I hope you enjoyed your visit.. Feel free to comment and please do come again! Have a great day!

Musical Monday!..

"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." ~ Aldous Huxley

"All music is beautiful."
~ Billy Strayhorn

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
~ Berthold Auerbach

********************

Moody Monday.. July 19-2010

musical

•of, pertaining to, or producing music: a musical instrument
•of the nature of or resembling music; melodious; harmonious
•fond of or skilled in music.
•just generally a bit bagpipey

I love music.. I used to sing pretty good.. but age has changed that..sadly the only musical instrument I can actually play is a very old turn-table record player.. I even suck at playing the radio.. I always hear static.. like it dares to not stop in the right spot... But I do have a few good records left that don't have scratches.. I really need some more records to all who might want to send me some.. Dave and all of the kids play the guitar video games with a guitar controller and drums too.. My hands won't even try to work like that..

Dave has a guitar.. I love to hear him try to play it.. He can play a few songs.. Cooper can play it a
tiny bit too.. I tried to learn to play too.. though I can do a pretty good Yankee doodle strum...
My hands really don't work like that either... ~ ...

.... ~ We bought this ancient piano at an auction the first year we were married.. we hate it and love it.. It's old and huge and heavy.. Missing some ivory it can still belt out a tune.. I would love to have it restored.. All three of my sisters could play it.. Cooper and Dave each sit down and pound out little songs here and there.. My first Cousin's Son.. Joey.. he plays the devil out of it every once in a while.. Mary..( My second sister).. tried to teach me to play piano when I was a little girl.. I tried and tried and did actually play some little beginners song once.. But I must say that My hands didn't work well at that either..

I love anything musical.. I have wind chimes hanging all over my house..
~ the fan and air conditioner vents blow gentle breezes across them.. constantly playing little tinkling songs.. I have them in almost every room.. I also have a bunch of them outside to catch the winds that might come blowing through.. I love to hear them bonging from the clothesline posts in a windy thunderstorm.. or whispering soft sounds from above the ducks cage.. I often touch them as I pass.. causing them to sway and play music for a few seconds.. I always smile as I walk on to where ever I was headed.. finally I have found something musical that my hands can play!! Have a wonderful Musical night!!

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What they have committed to their readers is that they will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated.. random.. They encourage us to visit other people's posts and leave comments. They say that they hate rules and love memes.. With that in mind.. here are today's questions..

Saturday 9: &-17-2010: Love Hurts!

1. Tell us about the last time that you got hurt in the arena of love.~ Love hurts even when someone doesn't mean too.. I try to love almost everyone. so I am bound to get hurt feelings now and again. I usually give a fool the benefit of doubt and don't kill him or her the first go around...

2. Have you ever been part of the wedding party, other than your own?
~ I have never been a bride's maid but twice a bride.. Now on the other hand Dave and I once went to a wedding where we partied like crazy for almost two days..
3. Let's say you find yourself in Hell after you die. Think about everyone you've known in your life. Who would be the one person that would least likely to surprise you by being in Hell with you? ~ I know so many people that in my own humble opinion most likely went that way.. this question is one I can't answer without hurting feelings someway.. But let me clearly state that I personally have NO PLANS to be meeting anyone at all in hell...
4. What brings you good luck?~ good planning beats good luck most of the time.. I do have a lucky rock somewhere though.. I keep loosing it..

5. Do you have a photo blog? If so, feel free to share the link with us! ~ I have this blog and one on MY space.. I do put photo's on this one but I don't think I'd call it a photo blog..

6. What is your biggest source of news? (Internet? Newspaper? Television? Radio? The Daily Show? Other?) ~ That is easy.. I watch weather on TV sometimes but most of what I hear or see is On-line.. I have never watched television very much..

7. What's the hottest you've ever been in your life? ~ It has been terribly hot this summer.. and if you're talking about some other kind of hot .. well I ate all those peppers that time and that was HOT.. Dave and I went swimming at midnight in the hot tub in 1994.. WOW that was really hot..

8. If you had to choose a theme song for your blog, which would would you choose and why?~ I don't think I'd choose one at all.. I do sometimes hum Kum Bah Yah while I'm writing though..

9. Who was the last person you had an online conversation with that you've never met or talked to on your phone? ~ some dude name Chris messaged me on Face-book to ask me if I played a fish tank game.. I said no and he said "Damn!".. I tried to speak to him to say I would play if he asked me nice and he had already blocked me from speaking to him.. Before that.. it was a Wonderful friend that I met In a chat room.. we laughed and joked.. his wife is still my friend... Sadly Josh and his daughter both lost their lives to a drunk driver..
This is my first time doing Saturday-9.. let me know if you like it..

- Langston Hughes

"Do not, on a rainy day, ask your child what he feels like doing, because I assure you that what he feels like doing, you won't feel like watching."

"Some people are making such thorough preparation for rainy days that they aren't enjoying today's sunshine."

#1~ Thursday Challenge ~ a place for photographic fun!

~ "WEATHER" (Sunny, Calm, Rainy, Snowy, Icy, Fog, Clouds, Thunderstorm, Lightening, Hail, Windy,...)

~ Rain drops on the car window.. a mid afternoon downpour..

###########################

#2~ An acrostic poem.. look for a phrase along the edge..

Blessings

Bible thumpers you call us
Less than willing to believe
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Scientific facts.. easier to trust
Something real to believe you once said
I smiled.. having walked down the same road myself
No need for me to let breath go wasted
Goodness and Mercy will find you yet
Should you ever take the time to count

Cant you even count that high
Over and over I hear your rant
Underpaid.. under loved.. pitiful you
Never take for granted the truth of life
Tender moments overlooked
Even the smallest of blessings
Deserves to be recognized

Over and over I sang out loud
Never minding that my throat is dry
Eventually you slept.. peaceful at last

Barely able now to recall
Years of lean times.. basics the blessings

Oh how I cried and prayed
Needing something real to hold on to
Every day a trial.. every moment a blessing.

Wonderful Wednesday!

"Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose." ~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

"Human beings can always be relied upon to exert, with vigor, their God-given right to be stupid." ~ Dean Koontz

"Drawing is the poet's written line, set down to see if there be a story worth telling, a truth worth revealing." ~ Irving Stone

~ I would love to be in this place.. floating on the cool clean water.. a bottle of liquid refreshment chilling in a basket close at hand..

####################
~ Dave and I were surprised to come across this
new-fangled train station way out in the middle of no where.. seeming out of place on a back road.. close to nothing important.. there is a gate between the rail road tracks and the front of the building.. but we honestly couldn't tell rather the building housed a real railway station or rather it was just the folly of some individual who lived next to train tracks.. Hattieville station it says.. and even in the photo you can see the schedule on the front of the building.. interesting to say the least.. Checking maps and encyclopedia entries on the history of rail roads.. I did discover Hattieville station on one of the old maps.. It appears to be in this same location.. I also discovered that the tracks in front of this lonesome station is what was once The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.. After several mergers over a number of years it is now a small part of CSX Transportation.. Maybe someone has decided to revitalize a building that was hidden by vines and old trees.. or maybe someone just decided on a new decorating scheme to celebrate the location of their new building on an old historical sight.... either way our curiosity was peeked..
next time I'm in that neck of the woods maybe I'll get Dave to stop and go up to the door.....

####################
Lensday! ~ The Lens Day Challenge for this week is History.

~ This Train station is a very real part of southern history.. passenger trains used to run from town to small town all up and down the east coast.. There are very.. very few train tracks left here but many of the old stations are still standing along wide grassy area's where the tracks used to lay.. This Station is privately owned and is located in Kline, South Carolina..

Three Word Wednesday asks us to write what we can from three words that they choose.. Just Three Words! This weeks words are.. gentle, praise, vulgar ..
This week.. as is often the case.. the words seemed to be at odds with each other.. and therefore at odds with me and me with them and dogs were barking and a phone called someone to work.. rush.. rush.. then finally.. as I made the third circle around the place.. hoping some dog would find a perfect spot.. I was trying the words different ways.. listening for something that struck.. this time it was the first line that leaped from my brain.. so many ways for a gentle one to be tormented.... as you read this poem think about what the words mean.. are you sure they mean what you think.. Please.. let me know if you like my writings.. I hope you enjoy your stop by my crazy world today.. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

~ Appeal ~

oh gentle soul
so long tormented...

what manner of death
your invocation...

at his grunts
of vulgar praise?

This week’s Photography Challenge: ‘Crooked – Straight’

~ Path to the river...

Doesn't the path look inviting? and just thinking of a swim in the ice cold river water makes me want to crack open all the ice trays and fill up the cooler some bottles of water and cold tea and slap together some sandwiches and head out.. I haven't been to the river in a few years... We never seem to have time to do things that we used to do... even a day-cation to the river would surely be refreshing for all of us.. It is simply hot.. Too hot to cook.. too hot to sleep... too hot to almost everything... Thanks for stopping by my blog.. I love comments!! Have a great day!!

"Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness." ~ Kahlil Gibran

Friday My Town Shoot Out!! Celebration!!

... For some of us.. Anything at all can start a celebration!.. From a small town festival with children dancing in the streets to family birthday parties..

... Oh sweet sixteen... and would you look at that zebra striped cake?.. Looks good doesn't it?.. Let me tell you there is something to be said for just a plain old time cake.. with some sweet.. one color Icing.. Pink for little girls and mostly white for birthdays.. candy flowers stuck around if you're lucky.. or maybe when you get old as dirt like me.. you can have a black all over and under cake.. They said it was black Velvet.. next time I want a bottle of tequila instead.. 50 years old.. that's reason to celebrate? I guess it is..

don't even ask.. I'll just say YES!.. that is me... I am fifty!!
... From the most special of days ....

.. with perfect memories ...

and silly moments... To just plain old days.. ... filled with family
...or fun ... where anything could happen.. From the most important to the simplest of things....

We should never be afraid to Celebrate Life !! ....

I hope that this week-end you will find something to Celebrate.. maybe it's the frog that finally quits croaking outside of your window.. or the rain that finally falls.. Big or small .. Let's find a reason to Celebrate!!
Have a great week-end!
Patsy
